Birdsville

Birdsville is much bigger than I thought it would be and has all the amenities campers need for a comfortable life. Those Simpson Desert travellers who arrive after a west to east crossing certainly would enjoy seeing its lights in the distance. Kerry had to have a drink in the famous pub and we partook of the award winning Curried Camel Pie and also the Kangaroo and claret - a bit too gamey for me but the camel was just like lamb - our first meat for ages!! We took some snaps of Birdsville that you might enjoy.

The ruins of the Royal Hotel earmarked for restoration (thought it might look good in sepia)
The Diamantina looking very muddy

The Artesian water that supplies the town comes out of the ground at about 85 degrees
The gorgeous Sturt's Desert Pea - South Australia's floral emblem
Main Street
The desert Recovery Vehicle - we hoped we wouldn't need it
Some very sad looking hubs
